Palmetto Bay Earth Week - 2016

Palmetto Bay is committed to Earth Day in such a big way, we take a full week to celebrate. Each year, Villagers of all ages are invited to take part in a wide range of green activities -- all free to the public -- during the week around Earth Day, April 22.

April 17: Bird Walk Workshop

Come and walk with the Village of Palmetto Bay and Deering Estate for a Bird Walk Workshop taking place at Thalatta Estate from 8am-10am! Enjoy exploring the area and identifying some of the 170 species of birds in the community! Space is limited, please register here.


April 18 - 20: Lady Bug Releases

Elected officials join students for a first-hand demonstration on how ladybugs serve as nature’s pesticide, by releasing 75,000 of them into local school gardens. Times vary. See photos and videos from last year's lady bug release.


April 20: Poster Contest Tree Planting

Congratulations to our first place poster contest winner, Ian Schwartz, from Howard Drive Elementary School. Village officials will visit the winning school for a tree-planting ceremony on April 20th. The winner will also receive special recognition during the school's lady bug release, an ice cream party and Earth Week goodies for Ian's clasmates. April 21: Going Green @ Your Library

Join Village Officials at the Palmetto Bay Branch Library at 12:30 pm as they read and sing earth-friendly stories to children ages 3-7 years. Immediately following the reading, children will create a fun and colorful eco-craft. Space is limited, register here.


April 22: Movie Night

Come watch this year’s eco-movie-The Good Dinosaur, under the stars at 8pm! Don't forget your blankets and lawn chairs! Food & beverage will be available for purchase and you won’t want to miss out on the Ladybug release before the movie begins at 7:30pm!


April 23: "Shade Palmetto Bay"

Palmetto Bay residents can stop by Ludovici Park from 8am-11am and pick up any one of the FREE trees available. One tree per residence, please! Residents must provide own transportation for the trees/saplings. Must bring photo ID to show proof of Palmetto Bay residency. Read more.


April 23: Discovery Walk

After picking your tree and before the bike ride, join us for a 1.1 mile Nature Discovery Walk with an educational talk through Palmetto Bay’s Village Center from 8:30am-9:30am. Learn about the Hardwood Hammock & Pine Rockland habitats, the importance of destroying invasive exotics (Brazilian Pepper, Casurina Pine, Burma Grass, etc.), the three kinds of mangroves (red, black, & white) in Biscayne National Park, along with the crocodiles and alligators that inhabit the area. Please RSVP here and meet in the Ludovici Parking Lot.


April 23: Bike-B-Que & Rodeo

Join the Village of Palmetto Bay for a bike ride starting and ending at Ludovici Park. Ride along the Old Cutler Bike Trail visiting some of Palmetto Bay’s  beautiful landmarks! Bikers take off at 11:15 am. Enjoy complimentary BBQ lunch, music and fun activities!

April 24: Paddle Adventure - REGISTRATION CLOSED

Are you up for an adventure? The Village of Palmetto Bay and Deering Estate bring you a Paddle Adventure taking place at Deering Estate at 9am! Enjoy learning facts about the bay and observing marine wildlife with a guide! ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED, WE ARE FULLY BOOKED!


April 24: Floating for Flotsam

Team up with the Village of Palmetto Bay and Nature Postings, Inc. in a guided water system clean-up at 8am through the Coral Reef Park canal systems and around Thalatta Estate Park to collect floating debris found in the water. Bring your own kayak /vessel or reserve one through Nature Postings, Inc. Online Registration and Reservations www.naturepostings.com.
